"Diversity, equity, and inclusion matter to me because as a young African American boy growing up in the South in the 70's and 80's, I remember vividly feeling like I didn't have a voice. I remember being made to feel ashamed and embarrassed by the color of my skin, the texture of my hair, and the fullness of my lips. I remember the feeling of embarrassment because of where I lived. Diversity, equity, and inclusion matter to me because no children, regardless of their race, gender, culture, or socioeconomic status, or any other aspect of their identity, should ever have to feel that way."
