ECHO HORIZON SCHOOL COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS (2007-2008) FOOD LINK “FOOD OF THE MONTH” EACH MONTH Each month, our students collect a different “Food of the Month” (beans, tuna, soup, peanut butter, etc.). Our collection, combined with those of many other schools, congregations, businesses and agencies, helps Hope-Net affiliated local food pantries to provide over 400,000 meals, serving over 125,000 people each year.
PLAYDATE WITH A PURPOSE
EACH MONTH We organize small-scale, hands-on community service opportunities at non-profit organizations and agencies serving the Los Angeles area. Find that weekend time to get together with friends you’ve made at the school or make new ones while you are helping out in the community. Let us know the organizations you already support and we will help to organize a “Playdate with a Purpose.” Download the most recent Playdate information.
LA BALLONA CREEK CLEANUP
SEPTEMBER This annual event is part of the California Coastal Cleanup Day. We host the Duquesne cleanup site along the nearby channel of La Ballona Creek in Culver City. Wearing gloves and carrying disposal bags, each volunteer assists in picking up trash that has washed down storm drains and waterways leading into the sea.
TRICK OR TREAT FOR UNICEF
OCTOBER UNICEF collection boxes are distributed in the Tuesday Envelope before Halloween. Donations are solicited while trick-or-treating and turned in at school for delivery to UNICEF. A box full of coins allows UNICEF to deliver basic needs such as clean water, food, and medicine to children throughout the world.
HALLOWEEN CANDY COLLECTION OCTOBER Collection “Cauldrons” are in the school lobby for donations of leftover Halloween candy. The candy is donated to Children Helping Poor and Homeless People for their weekly distributions to the local homeless community and Operation Gratitude for care packages to our troops overseas.
THANKSGIVING IN A BOX
OCTOBER/NOVEMBER EHS families and several area businesses contribute enough food items to provide more than 100 low-income families with everything needed to make a traditional Thanksgiving feast, including a gift certificate to purchase a turkey. Classroom representatives, transported by parent volunteers, deliver the decorated boxes to Children Helping Poor and Homeless People (CHPHP) for distribution to families throughout the Los Angeles region.
KIDS TAKE ACTION - SHARE A GIFT TOY & BOOK DRIVE
DECEMBER EHS families are invited to involve their children in this holiday gift drive by asking them to select a toy or book that they think another child would like to receive. We deliver these unwrapped gifts to the Didi Hirsch Community Center, which distributes them to the families it serves.
ONE VOICE - HOLIDAY FOOD PROGRAM
DECEMBER The One Voice Holiday Food Program provides Christmas food baskets, toys and books to 2,500 families (12,500 people) living in poverty in the Los Angeles area. Alongside over 2,000 fellow volunteers, EHS families come together at the Barker Hangar to sort and package the goods. The following weekend, volunteers gather at Head Start Distribution centers across Los Angeles County to personally give out the food with a sense of caring and family involvement..
BIG SUNDAY
MAY Big Sunday brings together 50,000 of your friends and neighbors to build community through more than 100 service projects all over the city. Founded by a former EHS parent, David Levinson, Big Sunday is supported by current EHS families and alumni who captain numerous projects. There is something for everyone of any age!
